Best 3 Beaches within easy reach of the Test Valley…just in time for Half-Term

screen-shot-2017-02-09-at-13-22-21

It is a weird one to write about as the snow is trying (and failing miserably!) to fall, but as Half-Term approaches I really enjoy spending at least one day on an “outing” with the children and heading to the beach.

It is always a winner as the beaches are clear and parking is easy. Just wrap up warm, take a durable bag for the “treasure”, exercise the dog and the children, eat fish & chips and return feeling full of fresh sea-side air and sand filled shoes!

MUDEFORD

Mudeford Quay is situated at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour and provides spectacular views out to sea and back to Christchurch town.

There are two distinct areas to Mudeford Quay each with their own unique character and uses.

The Quay Head is the hub of visitor activity. A cluster of historic buildings provides a focal point and a local landmark.

There is a large grassed area that is ideal for picnicking and the area overlooks the harbour A children’s play area is situated at the base of the Quay

There is a new restaurant called the Noisy Lobster, located at the beautiful Avon Beach on the south coast of Dorset (Put BH23 4AN into your Sat Nav). Alternatively, try The Beach House, situated on the harbour side of the sand spit at Hengistbury Head which enjoys stunning views across the harbour, Hengisbury Head and Mudeford Quay.

SANDBANKS

Sandbanks is a peninsula and the posh part of Poole. Dubbed the “Palm Beach” of the UK (have an open mind!), plug BH13 7QJ into your Satnav and you will be taken to the huge car park in Sandbanks which has direct access onto the beautiful sandy beach.

Sandbanks beach is a holder of the European Blue Flag again for a record 26 years.  The beach has fine, golden sand which gradually slopes away into the water ensuring it is safe for even the smallest of children.

A chain car ferry also operates between Sandbanks and Studland Bay which does save the long drive round.

If you are looking to splash out, then do consider booking a table at Rick Stein’s in Sandbanks. Delicious and remarkably children friendly (one of the best Kid’s Menu’s I’ve seen)

WEST WITTERING

In the opposite direction but still offering an equally fabulous beach day out, West Wittering is high up on our favourite’s list!

Offering wonderful views of Chichester Harbour and the South Downs beyond, the natural and unspoilt sandy beach of West Wittering is just as beautiful in the Winter as it is the Summer (and an awful lot quieter!).

There are extensive acres of neatly mown grass close to the beach perfect for parking, and picnics.  There is ample space to run around and usually lots of  wind and kite surfers, to watch. The whole area is internationally recognised for its wildlife, birds and unique beauty.

If looking for somewhere nice to eat, do book a table at Drifters in East Wittering. The parking is not as convenient (it is mostly on the road), but well worth it!
